In the hills of the ancient Langhe region , a great story begins with a memorable beginning . The story of the Abbona winery starts with the brilliant work of the young Marziano Abbona and his son Celso. The passionate core of the winery was with the ancestors and founders of the winery, where they worked with passion, perseverance and progressiveness . Celso Abbona was one of the first in his generation to believe in the potential of the territory around Dogliani; a town located fairly centrally in the Langhe, just south of the famous Barolo . The region has a varied landscape because not only wine is grown there; the landscape shows a variety of vineyards, fields, meadows and forests. The heart of the region is the town of Dogliani , although the wine with this name comes from a considerably larger area. Together with his family, Celso planted the legendary vineyard Bricco Doriolo , located in Santa Lucia di Dogliani. The vineyard not only symbolizes the historical memory of the company, but the vineyard is also known as the most prestigious Cru's of Dogliani. The showpiece of the wines of Abbona , the Dolcetto, is named after Papa Celso, from his great love for this important grape from Dogliani and of course in memory of this important man. Marziano Abbona was only fourteen years old when his father 'Papa Celso' died and he suddenly took over the management of the eponymous winery. Marziano and his brother Enrico grew into passionate winemakers. " We make traditional wines; we are not afraid to say so. We are proud of our identity. Every wine must be an inspiration and must tell its own story", says Marziano. The roots and history of the Abbona winery stands for hard work, many challenges and loyalty to tradition and passion for experimentation.
In the early 1980s, Marziano and Enrico discovered the riches of the Langhe and immediately saw a challenge in these misty valleys. At that time, Barolo had not yet been discovered, and the brothers were able to buy huge tracts of land in the hilly area of Monteforte d'Alba and Novello. They did not hold back from expanding their wine estate and bought the best plots, situated in the best positions, of the valley, including the traditionally most prestigious valleys Bricco Barone, Ravero in Novello and Rinaldi in Monteforte d'Alba. Quality designations had not yet been awarded at that time, but the brothers were convinced that these 'great' vineyards had high potential to produce quality wines. Nothing could be further from the truth; today, Barolo, also known as The King of Wines , is widely planted here.
In his search for even more beautiful and better vineyards, Marziano bought one of the best vineyards in Barolo in the early 1990s; Pressenda Monteforte d'Alba and Cerviano in Novello. From this vineyard came in 1996 the first Cinerino Langho DOC Bianco, made from 100% Viognier. A fantastic wine . The wine started as an experiment, made from Marziano's high expectations by terroir and environment; nothing could be further from the truth. This Cinerino is a piece of wine estate history of Abbona because it was nominated several times later as one of the best white wines from the Langhe region. While the wine production of the Abbona family grew and grew and also gained international recognition, Mara Abbona , daughter of Marziano, also joined the company in 1999. In the same year, to great family sorrow, brother Enrico died after a long illness. In honor of his brother, Marziano dedicated one of his wines DOC Langhe Favorita to his brother. It also symbolizes the entry of his daughter into the wine company. The wines are maturing beautifully in the cellars of Abbona. But,... we have reserved our personal stock especially for you .
By the end of the 90s, the estate had grown so large that it was time for a second wine estate. In the middle of the vineyards, the second Abbona estate was constructed. In fact, they reconstructed an existing estate, Cascino Valle dell'Olmo , in Borgata San Luigi, into something completely new . The existing estate was incorporated and completely renovated according to the latest style and construction possibilities. This ambitious project has resulted in a beautiful winery, a foundation where the boundary between the past and the present became reality. To this day, Abbona produces beautiful wines here, in this environmentally conscious winery equipped with all the techniques for winemaking, all year round. The Abbona family actively researches scent and taste developments on a daily basis in order to benefit from this in the future. Spread over a large part of the Langhe region, Abbona is one of the well-known winemakers in the area. He is known for his best Barbera and Nebbiolo wines . The soil, which contributes to the high quality it delivers, dates back to the Miocene period and consists of limestone and clay. Most vineyards are sheltered on slopes and the heat of the sun is retained here. Due to the high humidity, there is a lot of mist formation. The name Nebbiolo, the grape from which Barolo, Barbaresco and Nebbiolo d'Alba are made, is derived from the misty hills in this area. In October, the month of picking, there is often a 'misty' dew over the vineyards. Hence the name Nebbiolo; 'nebbia' means 'mist'.
We import almost the entire line of the Abbona family. Purely because the quality is obvious. From the classic Barbaresco 'Faset' , a gem among wines, to the Cinerino Viognier , it is all beautiful. Not to mention the Barolo Reserva Cerviano . Absolutely unique in its kind; 1 year longer wood maturation than is normally desired for Barolos. This allows you to experience even more finesse and sublime softness. Also the more common line, the Barbera d'Alba and Nebbiolo d'Alba is a must-try. Strong in its kind and at the same time accessible for everyday use. We also have Abbona's Flagship wine in both 0.75 and magnums. It is the most important Dogliani, made from grapes grown on vines older than 60 years. And proud to have in stock. Order Abbona wines directly from Dare Wines.
