Casa Santos Lima is a family business dedicated to the production of Portuguese wines. The company is present directly or indirectly in the regions of Lisbon, Algarve, Alentejo, Vinho Verde and Douro Valley . The Santos Lima wine estate covers some 400 hectares of vineyards and produces a range of wines that are known worldwide for their excellent quality and, above all, value for money. Casa Santos Lima is also the largest producer of " Vinho Regional Lisboa " and " DOC Alenquer " and in recent years has been one of the most awarded Portuguese wineries in major national and international wine competitions .
Currently, the company’s headquarters, consisting of offices, a wine shop and wineries, are located in Quinta da Boavista in Alenquer, just 45 km north of Lisbon, a region where wine production is centuries old and the typical rural landscapes are known for their immense beauty. The vineyards are located on gentle slopes with an altitude of between 100 and 220 metres, which benefit from an excellent inclination to the sun and a continental climate cooled by the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Alenquer is one of the richest wine regions due to its diversity of grape varieties, soil types and perfect climate. The cool summer nights and mild winters are an important factor for the production of quality grapes. The maritime influence contributes to the production of wines with good acidity, a very typical characteristic of this region. The soils are mainly clay and limestone.
LISBON
The estate has belonged to the Santos Lima family for more than four generations and offers ideal conditions for producing quality wines . Casa Santos Lima also has its own vineyards and winery in Tavira (in the Algarve) and through partnerships with other wine producers, the Santos Lima winemaking family also manages vineyards and wineries in the Alentejo, Douro and Vinho Verde regions. Casa Santos Lima has a very broad wine portfolio and produces wines each year from its five different regions; producing red, white and rosé wines, but also sparkling wines, frizzantes and even dessert wines. Currently, Casa Santos Lima is responsible for the production of approximately 40% of all certified wine in the Lisbon region and is a major exporter of Portuguese wine.
ALGARVE
Most of Casa Santos Lima’s vineyards in the Algarve are located in Tavira. The wines produced are characterized as velvety and fruity. The typical Mediterranean mild climate, with more than 3000 hours of sunshine per year, combined with the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and clay and limestone soil, provide wonderful conditions to produce high quality grapes.
ALENTEJO
The vineyards, located near Beja , are planted in naturally warm areas of continental climate with a clear Mediterranean influence. The low raised soil of clay and shale ensures all the right conditions for the production of high quality grapes. The wines produced here show the typical characteristics of the region. The red wines reveal rich tannins and structure, the white and rosé wines are fresh, juicy and rich in subtle fruit.
VINHO GREEN
In the 36 hectares of vineyards, located in the demarcated region of Vinho Verde , we find a variety of the most noble and regionally emblematic grape varieties , such as Trajadura, Loureiro, Arinto, Avesso, Alvarinho and Espadeiro . The vineyards are cross-cropped and placed in a simple string. Traditional trained vines exist although on a smaller scale. Benefiting from a cool and humid climate with Atlantic influence, the wines are characterized by an aromatic intensity, freshness and minerality.
DOURO
The winery was originally owned by the legendary Dona Antónia Ferreira (Ferreirinha). Situated in the Douro Demarcated Region, at an altitude of 600 metres, it is an area renowned for its high quality. The majority of the estate is covered with vineyards, of which 60% are planted with white grape varieties (Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho and Verdelho) and 40% with red grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Sousão and Tinta Barroca) . The vines are planted in the typical Douro ‘layers’ in the rocky soil; on average the vines are 65 to 100 years old.
