Egon Müller is the undisputed king of sweet Mosel (Saar) wines . His Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese are among the best wines in the world!

In 2011 he was elected winemaker of the year ! The jury consisting of fellow winemakers, various Masters of Wine and the previous four 'winemakers of the year', awarded him this title. 'His wines have been known worldwide for their exceptional quality for years'.

The Scharzhof estate has been in the family's hands since 1797. Egon Müller IV is the fourth generation of winemakers in the family. He himself was born in 1959, coincidence or not, but it was a great wine year for the Mosel! He gained his knowledge in America, Japan and France, at Pichon Lalande and Château d'Yquem, among others. A true wine master.

TERROIR

Although the wines are sold as 'Mosel' wine, they actually come from the Saar region, a tributary of the Mosel. Since 2007, these have been two separate regions. The Saar valley is colder and more susceptible to the cool winds. The climate here is more extreme than on the Mosel, with sometimes harsh winters, which makes it more difficult for the grapes to ripen. The downside of this slow ripening is that it gives the wines more intensity and a wonderfully unique aroma . The family owns around 8 hectares here. The very steep slopes, the southern location and the slate soil all contribute to the complexity of the wines.

CELLAR MASTER

The cellar master of the family is Stefan Fabian. He has a traditional method. The quality of the wines is determined 100% in the vineyard. Minimal intervention in the cellar, so that the terroir is fully expressed. Only natural yeasts are used during fermentation. The most unique thing about the vinification of Egon Müller wines is the use of large (1000 l), old, wooden foeders . Almost all Mosel wines are vinified in stainless steel barrels. The use of foeders leads to a harmonious result and a great maturation potential , without giving off aromas.
