BODEGAS MILUVA SINCE 2012; RUEDA AT ITS BEST

Bodegas Miluva is a special wine family; originally a family with years of experience in the food sector and from here they have grown into passionate wine specialists with a lot of expertise in the winemaking profession. In 2012 their wine adventure began with the construction of a beautiful building in the heart of Rueda-Valladolid and with this the production of wines of exceptionally high quality . The winery is located on the banks of the Duero and its tributaries Trabancos, Zapardiel and Adaja. These form the so-called ' Golden Triangle '. The region around Valladolid is a very renowned wine region, known for its exceptional natural conditions, which has given the production of high-quality wines worldwide recognition . The modern winery Valdecuevas, called La Pardina , was built brand new in 2012 and is equipped with the latest modern and versatile technologies, which gives Bodegas Miluva every opportunity to develop excellent quality products. In addition to wines, they also focused on the production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil . For the production of olives 150 hectares of estate are reserved, olive groves are situated in a unique location, in terms of climate and perfect soil conditions. Both in the vineyards and in the olive groves the latest technologies are used according to the highest quality standards, to ensure that the small yields yield maximum quality, year after year.

'EL REY' RUEDA

We go back to the 14th century, when the Court of the Spanish Royal Family was of great influence. They had settled in Valladolid. Local wines from the region, mainly Sherry-like wines made from Palomino Fino, better known as Donado, were very popular. In the 70s everything changed; the new Rueda was born and the glorious return of dry wines based on their own grape, the Verdejo , was continued. The town of Valladolid and with it the wine region Rueda became the vibrant heart of the Verdejo grape. Rueda received a Denóminacion de Origen (DO) recognition in 1980; designated as an official region of origin in Northern Spain. Rueda is now famous and notorious in Spain for its fantastic fresh, dry, juicy white wines made from (mainly) Verdejo; for blends Airèn and Sauvignon Blanc are often used. Verdejo is and will always remain the King of the Rueda, ' El Rey de Rueda.

CLIMATE, CHARACTER & LOVE FOR THE LAND

The vineyards of the DO Rueda are located around the city of Rueda, on ' flatlands' between 700 and 800 meters above sea level. There is a continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters . These conditions force the vines to find water deep underground. With 2,700 hours of sunshine per year and an average rainfall of 450 mm per year, the Rueda area is very sunny. The temperature differences between day and night are very large. This is also the secret of the fresh taste of the wines; during the day the grapes are exposed to full sun and develop natural sugars, at night this is compensated by the coolness of the night, allowing a nice acidity to develop. This creates a perfect balance between acidity and sugars in the fruit. Part of the terroir is also the soil; in Rueda it is stony and alluvial; alluvial soil is characterized by loose material (regolith) that has been deposited as sediment by a river. On the estate of Valdecuevas, one extra important component in the soil contributes to the exclusive quality of the wines, gravel . In combination with the dry, very cold winters and hot summers, this results in top quality grapes. The best vineyards of Valdecuevas have gravel-dominant soils.

VERDEJO, VERDEJO, VERDEJO

Verdejo is the most important grape in Rueda . From the moment that the wines of Rueda changed in style from soft and mature to fresh and dry, it was Verdejo that set the tone. For white Rueda, Verdejo has become the basic grape. The grape is perfect for making fresh, dry wines. It produces aromatic wines with nice acids and liveliness, exactly the type of wine that is very popular today. Verdejo is certainly exported to countries such as the Netherlands and Germany; the Netherlands has been the largest market for Rueda again in the past year, followed by Germany in second place. Dutch wine drinkers love the dry aromatic and slightly fruity character of these wines. But the attractive price for good quality also plays a role of course.

IN THE CELLARS OF MILUVA

After picking and strict control of the grapes, production starts in the beautiful cellars of Valdecuevas; equipped with the latest technologies. In small stainless steel tanks, cool fermentation is used, to obtain greater extraction of aromas. Then the grapes are softly pressed at a low temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, for a period of approximately 19 to 21 days. Miluva sets high standards for the maintenance of its vineyards , with respect for the natural environment. They continuously try to implement better agricultural techniques, all for the benefit of the product and the guarantee of quality, time and time again. Thanks to this effort, Bodegas was again certified by the IFS (International Food Standard) in 2016.
