Owner and founder of Apaltagua Tutunjian Estate, Palomar is Edward Tutunjian. Originally from Armenia, but emigrated to the United States, where he became a successful businessman. During one of his business trips to Chile, he fell in love with this beautiful country and its special wines. He decided to invest in Chile and its fertile soil and acquired his first vineyard called ' La Pancora ', literally translated ' The pancake ' (most likely named after the shape of the wine country). The wine region is located in the prestigious Curico Valley , one of Chile's famous wine regions.
Tutunjian expanded his wine estate from that moment on. Purely with the intention to expand the variety of grapes on Chilean soil, he started his second estate located exactly on the border between Curico Valley and Maule Valley (south of Colchagua Valley) , an area known for the high quality of the grapes. He called his second estate ' Huaquen Estate'.
Edward Tutunjian launched his first wine on the American market under the line 'Pacifico Sur' and immediately had an enormous reach. The next wine estate was born, 'Vinedos y Bodega Apaltagua' , located a little further north in Colchagua Valley. This turned out to be not without merit, as he then became not only one of the most important players on the wine market, but also one of the best winemakers in the world. As icing on the cake, he bought his fourth estate in Maipo Valley, ' San Juan de Pirque'. This is not only a wine estate but also a guest house; considered Chilean national heritage. The estate is surrounded by forests of hundred-year-old native tree species.
The wine growing in Chile extends from north to south . It is a particularly diverse climate, because the country is surrounded by 4 natural barriers: the dry Atacama desert in the north, the South Pole in the south, the Andes mountains in the east and the Pacific Ocean in the west. The various soil types and different microclimates ensure a great diversity of wine types and aromas. Chile has a Mediterranean climate , with humid winters and springs and generally a dry summer. Due to the large temperature differences between day and night in the summer, the many hours of sunshine and the relatively high humidity of the Pacific, Chile has excellent conditions for wine growing .
Because Chile has different landscapes and climates, there are many areas where wine is produced. In total, Chile has five different wine regions , namely: Atacama, Coquimbo Valley, Aconcagua Valley, Central Valley and the southern region . Within these five main areas, there are also a number of subregions. These subregions consist of zones and districts. The wine regions are spread throughout Chile, and each have their own soil type and wine growing technique.
The 'Divino' series, literally translated as ' heavenly ' is the first line of winery Palomar. The production of the series takes place in Central Valley and is in principle all fermented on stainless steel. This produces fresh, aroma-rich wines. The Reserva line is a line higher, of which many of the wines have had (short) maturation on wooden barrels. This series is irreversibly of beautiful quality that you must have tasted.
The most famous oenologist Alvaro Espinoza, contributes to the sublime quality of the Palomar wines. Together with a team of winemakers they produce these high quality lines.
