On the French island of Corsica we find the winemaker Cave Saint Antoine . Here wines have been made according to Corsican tradition for many years. Cave Saint-Antoine is owned by the Drouet Frères, who have bought up various vineyards in several places in France. A short introduction about the Drouet brothers, in case you have not yet read about these renowned winemakers. T he company Drouet Frères (1880) is one of the oldest trading houses in the Nantes district . Sales initially focused on trading in bulk wines. When the region was promoted to appellation d'origine contrôlée in 1938, the company strategy changed and sales focused exclusively on the production and sale of Muscadet. In 1950, the company came into the hands of the two grandsons, Jacques and Jean . From that moment on, it was called Drouet Frères.
The third generation, Jean Philippe Drouet, took over the management in 1981. He decided to hand over the commercial side of the company to devote himself entirely to his passion: winemaking and vineyard management. He strives to make wine with a clear expression of terroir. By means of environmentally friendly winemaking without the use of chemical pesticides. The house is affiliated with the Terra Vitis organisation. In 2007, Drouet Frères took over the distribution company Antoine Subileau , based in Vallet.
Corsica is a real wine island . More than half of the surface consists of vineyards. They are in the bright sun, but receive welcome cooling from the Mediterranean Sea. Many wines are made on Corsica. Not the most popular in France, but good enough for a not too complicated glass. Wine has been made on Corsica for 6,000 years . Focaians, Romans, even Italians have pressed grapes there for centuries. The island was only sold to France in 1768. Winemaking on Corsica was not always smooth sailing. Halfway through the 20th century, there was little left of the wine growing on Corsica. That changed in the 1960s. Bulk wine producers took over the vineyards in the second half of the last century and started producing large volumes . Nowadays, more serious winemakers have the upper hand again. Corsica is now considered a decent French wine region.
This Pinot Noir Wooded comes from Eastern Corsica near Ghisonaccia. Cave Saint-Antoine was founded in 1975 to invest more in making traditional wine. The cooperative makes several types of wine and regularly receives awards at French wine competitions. This wine is an excellent alternative to the Bourgogne Pinot Noir. An elegant glass of wine with subtle use of wood.
