The Herdade Da Calada winery is one of the most modern wineries in Portugal . At the helm are two young entrepreneurs , Marian and Jean-Claude Penauille. They have given the winery a great quality boost by cleverly combining tradition, vineyard maintenance, and innovation such as modern cellar techniques . The Mediterranean appearance, which gives the winery its unmistakable charm , is reflected in the style of the wines. In 2000, a completely new wine cellar was built. Herdade da Calada was founded in 1854 by the descendants of the Duke of Lancaster, at that time surrounded by oaks and Australian eucalyptus trees. The estate is located 120 kilometers east of Lisbon , ten kilometers from the regional capital Evora, among the rolling hills of Alentejo. The house has undergone a lot of developments since then, but has always retained its beauty and elegance , as can be seen in the photos. The estate includes 35 hectares of vineyards and 110 hectares of olive groves. Tourists often visit this beautiful winery, as it offers perfect accommodation for guests and the owners are very hospitable . The authentic wines, the idyllic landscape; makes it a unique experience for guests.
Herdade stands for 'estate', or property or farm . 'Da Calada' means 'lime' , so literally translated ' The winery of lime' . This is reflected in the style and materials used for the construction of the winery. The basis of their quality assurance lies in the use of authentic grape varieties. Portugal is known for this. For red wines, these are mainly grape varieties such as Aragonés, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet . For the white wines, the well-known local grape varieties are Verdelho , Roupeiro and Antão Vaz . Recently, the grape varieties: Viognier, Chardonnay and Alvarinho have been planted in Alentejo. For some wines, the international grape varieties Syrah and/or Cabernet Sauvignon form part of the blend. A low yield is ensured, so that the grapes can give as much concentration as possible. Furthermore, all grapes in Da Calada are picked manually. In this way they ensure that the character of the warm, dry but fertile terroir of Alentejo is fully expressed.
Alentejo is a vast region in the southern half of Portugal , near the Spanish border. It covers about one third of the total surface area of Portugal and is populated by only 5% of the total population. It is a land of olive groves, vineyards and cork oak forests . In summer it is hot and dry . The region is traditionally known for its red wines, which are generally full and fruity. By using modern vinification techniques, more and more interesting white wines are also coming from the Alentejo. Alentejo is a wine region on the move. The combination of the extreme climate, local grape varieties and modern winemaking produces exciting wines that attract attention all over the world.

Wood-matured, powerful wine with a complex aroma of caramel, vanilla, roasted coffee beans, blackcurrants, cherries and various spices. The taste is deep and powerful and is supported by a ripe, firm tannin structure. The finish is filled with blackcurrant fruit, minerals and a soft caramel tone, originating from the maturation on French oak. It is recommended to decant this wine before serving.
Good with stews with ripe notes, game dishes with spicy notes and red fruit, grilled and roasted rib steak with creamy sauce and cooked vegetables. Also nice with Dry Aged red meat with spicy notes and rich dishes from the BBQ.
