The Quay Landing wine estate , with its eponymous wines, is located in the cooler part of South Australia, where the sun still shines richly over the vineyards, and the sea blows its cool sea breeze over the vineyards. "Quay Landing" refers to the location of the vineyards within the estate. "Quay" literally means 'a mole, a bank or a wharf, formed in the direction of the sea'. " Landing" we naturally translate as 'lands'. A wine estate located close to the coast, in a riverbed, nicely in the slope towards the sun, which reflects the fresh and at the same time the full sunny character of the wines.
Australia today can compete with the best wine producing countries in the world. The country is vast, but only 18 million people live there, spread out in and around the fertile rolling landscapes. Despite the vast distances, there is a remarkably strong sense of community; Australia is the equivalent of a 'country village'. It is therefore not surprising that Australia's wine industry is the most collaborative in the world . A small wine grower with a single vineyard on the south coast of Tasmania feels as much a part of the industry as the largest wine producer in South Australia, who owns thousands of hectares of vineyards. Today, in the 21st century, the Australian wine industry is more successful than ever as a collective wine producer.
South Australia, also known as South Australia , is together with New South Wales, New South Wales the area where most wine growing takes place. It is hot there and there is little rain , which would make you think that these are difficult conditions for a vineyard. Inland, therefore, you will find little wine growing. Only on the south coast, with New South Wales on the southeastern side and in the south-central South Australia, cool influences from the ocean blow over the land, which 'help' the vineyards. Still, grapevines have to do their best to ensure the survival of the vine. That is why nature is also given a helping hand in Australia and irrigation, the artificial addition of water to crops, takes place regularly in Australia.
Chardonnay is, next to Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, the most planted white grape variety in Australia. However, Chardonnay is characterized as the most popular grape in Australia, thanks to its rich flavor tones and fruity bouquet. Mainly in South Australia, but also in Hunter Valley, in New South Wales (near Sydney), this is a valued and much planted grape variety. Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc develop better in South Australia, where the influence of the maritime climate is the greatest.
French influences are also popular in red grape varieties. Pinot Noir , Cabernet Sauvignon , but mainly Shyraz , are without a doubt the most important grape varieties of Australia. The grape better known in France Syrah, originating from the Rhône Valley, was planted in the 19th century by the Scot James Busby, in the form of 6 cuttings in the Hunter Valley, where he bought a number of vineyards in 1824. James Busby is considered the father of Australian wine production. Because Syrah is so flexible in terms of adaptation to the climate and soil, it has been continuously planted for the past 160 years. The grape has the remarkable ability to retain its basic character and show many different faces, depending on the climate. Unlike 25 years ago, Shiraz now has an international status; worldwide people are trying to catch up with Australia in terms of production. However, because Australia honors the old vines, and develops strongly in new plantings and technical development, the country will always be ahead of the rest.
Of course we do not want to lag behind and we have included the tasteful Quay Landing Chardonnay and Quay Landing Shiraz in our selection.
