Portugal is the 'odd one out' of the European wine countries, which has only remained true to its own grape varieties . Grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Jaeèn, Trincadeira and Tinta Roriz are not all equally well known in European vernacular. But it is precisely the Portuguese wines that are authentic and the global grapes are increasingly gaining a foothold. It is a true treasure trove with dozens of varieties that no one has ever heard of outside their own region. Better known is Port; by far Portugal's greatest asset.
